Artist Statement & Description
Created for 2026 Glenside Lions Art Exhibition, this abstract work stands as a visceral, cathartic response to years of complex lived experience. It is the culmination of a long journey navigating AML—a testament to a process defined by start-stop attempts where the painting could only progress as the body and mind allowed. The sheer physical weight of the canvas itself bears witness to these distinct chapters, holding within its dense, built-up layers the passage of time and the very physical act of enduring.
At its heart, this piece is an exploration of deep introspection. It captures the quiet weight of assessing a life lived, reflecting on past decisions, and confronting the universal question of how much time remains and how to do better with it. For months on end, confined to the sterile, monochrome environment of a hospital, the vibrant play of colour and fluid movement could not be physically realised; instead, it was liberated and kept alive purely within my imagination.
When the time finally came to bring this long-held vision into reality, the final layers were delivered with a kinetic fervour and raw physical energy I had not been able to exercise in years. What the viewer sees at a distance is a striking, powerful convergence of movement, but it is an invitation to the macro level that reveals the true story. Up close, the minute details, deliberate overlaps, and intersecting marks expose the cyclical rhythm of sunset and sunrise—a profound meditation on conscience, choice, and the ultimate realisation that life is found entirely in the detail.
